Updating white kitchen cabinets

(Spoiler: nnnnnoootttt.) My sisters & I were outside tackling the cabinet doors.Alyssa sanded all the doors with an orbital sander, & Megan & I worked on adding the “trim” yardstick detail to the fronts. Ours was a little on the insane side, but it ended perfectly. I decided to trim the doors out to cover part of the old-fashioned hinge that extended onto the cabinet door. I just felt like that poke-y part was a bit too dated.

New pendant lights can be a fairly inexpensive update.

Here’s one that’s similar to the pendants in the above photo: Are you living with oak cabinets?

Adding trim to cabinet doors has obviously been done before.

One day I was waiting at the paint counter at Lowe’s, there was a bucket of yardsticks, and I was thinking that I should buy wood trim that size because it’s exactly the look I had in mind – flat, shaker style, and the width of the boards were still small enough for the tiny drawers.

She set about painting her cabinets — and the outcome is stunning.“My main goal was to brighten and modernize the space, yet using most of what was already there," Johnson, 32, told TODAY Home.

To stay within her budget, Johnson sanded and painted the cabinets and installed the brand-new countertops herself.“I recommend splurging on countertops and hardware, as those are the elements that really add a sense of quality to a space,” said Johnson.“Don't be afraid to paint your cabinets, but definitely take the time to do it right.”Johnson documented the full renovation on her own blog, as well as a blog she contributes to called, A Beautiful Mess. I had no idea it was copper until after the hardware sat in de-greaser overnight. I screwed the hinges back onto the doors and made a trip to Lowe’s.We figured out that you should cut multiples at once to save time & ensure perfectly even cuts.I didn’t bother with mitered corners because I knew you wouldn’t be able to tell after they were sanded, primed, and painted.I let the cabinet doors and drawers dry/cure for almost a week. 🙂 Th fabric is a temporary fix for the appliance garage.I am modifying the doors from where the cooktop used to be to go in this spot.It all started when Mandi Johnson wanted to freshen up the look of the kitchen in her ranch-style home in Caton, Ohio. With a budget of ,000, she knew she wouldn’t be able to make any actual renovations, so she focused on small things that would make a big impact. Next, I used Goof-Off and steel wool to remove the grease residue.I brought the strips home, cut them to length and attached them around the edges of the cabinet doors with a brad nailer. Ladies, if you’ve never used a saw and a nail gun, you must. 🙂 This is how the doors looked after the trim was added. Of course, I took a day and caulked the cracks and holes and prepped the doors and drawers for painting.
